Kairos is a Greek concept of the perfect moment.

When acrylic artist Patricia Finely approached me about collaborating on a show with painter Brian Popp, I was reluctant to commit at first, as I was newly pregnant and struggling with ways to rethink my approach to the very toxic art of metalsmithing, as well as adjusting to working with my changing body. After a few discussions, and our decision to create with the concept of Kairos in mind, it started to feel right.

What more perfect moments exist than the creation and birth of a new human being?

My show focus was initially narrowed to etched and roller-printed cuffs because they were accessible to me through time spent on 2D art – both the placement of imprinted materials and drawing – rather than working with dangerous chemicals at my bench. A botanical theme fit the concept in two ways; it captured a singular moment, and represents a beautiful, unknown, growing creation.

Some imagery is hidden on the inside of my work because I think art can be very personal, and it allows you to share a secret with something you’re wearing. I really enjoy people’s reaction to and ideas behind why it’s hidden. There are no wrong answers. The beauty of art is that it means something different to everyone who experiences and creates it.

I hope you enjoy the show.
